Everyone has a few memories that they seem to never forget. A lot of times, I’ll be driving in the car and just have a thought pop into my head or see something that reminds me of something else. The other day, I was remembering a time when I went on vacation with my dad, step-mom and sister B.J. We were going to meet my Aunt and her family in the Rocky Mountains and go visit the Grand Canyon. Normally this would have been a very cool trip except for the fact that I was 18, had a boyfriend and had much better things to do with my time than spend time with my family and younger family members. It was important for my dad to have this special trip so off we went. Our family took off from Seattle. My Aunt was coming from the Mid-West and we were meeting in the middle. I remember so clearly driving “Rosie” (the stationwagon) and pulling the pop-up trailer behind us to go on our adventure. Being 18, I also remember me driving for a little bit on the trip and my dad being a terrible backseat driver. People who know me now would never believe that I used to be quiet and very complacent. Not on that day. I was fed up with my dad and told him he could drive the rest of the way-I had enough of the critique of my driving skills.
The trip itself was even more fun! (A little sarcasm there)...
We made several stops at many campgrounds along the way before we reached our final destination. I swear every time we stopped, it was raining. I can’t remember my record but let me tell you I got awfully good at putting up that stupid pop up trailer in the rain. At one point, we blew out a tire on the trailer and were stranded in Vernal, Utah. We waited a few hours for a tow truck and because of this unfortunate event, I will never forget Vernal, Utah. I call it Dinosaurland. We were there for a few days and visited the Dinosaur bones. Looking back now it was pretty cool to see these bones right in the land. At 18, it was long, boring and hot. Plus, my Aunt and Uncle insisted that it was better for our bodies to drink lukewarm water in the 100 degree heat than cold water because it would be too much of a shock. Please!!! (Just so you know– I love my aunt and uncle and no, they do not get my newsletter :)) Ironic isn’t it. What small details you can remember if you want to. By the way, the story isn’t finished. The whole trip was supposed to be about seeing the Grand Canyon. O.K.—that part is cool—even at 18. Here’s the kicker… We finally made it to see the Grand Canyon. Walked out on the big cliff. Stayed there for about a 1/2 hour and LEFT. Can you believe it!!! It still kills me to think about it. The Grand Canyon is supposed to be one of the most beautiful places in the world and we were there for less than a 1/2 day and stayed in good ole Vernal (Dinosaur-land), Utah for 3 days! Obviously, this vacation was unforgettable. AAHH! Memories aren’t they great. Some good, some bad but all part of our history. Sometimes, I have a hard time coming up with things to write about in the newsletter. While my newsletter helps you learn more about me, it has also forced me to keep a “journal”, if you will, of what’s going on in this time of my life. If I do nothing else, at least I have this as a notebook of thoughts. Time goes by so fast, make sure YOU take the time to note or write down what’s important to you.
